About Us

Scales and Tails Utah is a family-run reptile and bird educational and entertainment company.  We have been providing safe, interactive, and educational presentations since 2004.  Scales and Tails was started by Owner and Founder, Shane Richins.  Shane has always had a special place in his heart for animals, but the instigator was a pet green iguana named Horse. Horse went everywhere with Shane.  As Shane got older and was looking to make a mark in society, he and his then girlfriend, Mandi, met Danny Conner, of Danny Conner’s Reptile Adventures, at the Utah State Fair.  She encouraged Shane to try his hand at starting a business where he could educate the public about these amazing and often misunderstood creatures.  Several years later, he met his wife, Rindy, who helped launch him from a home business doing small traveling shows to an educational facility and retail shop. We have grown from doing small birthday parties, to doing large fairs, corporate events, school assemblies, and community outreach.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are you handling Covid-19?

We are following all CDC guidelines for wearing masks and group gatherings.  Our public-facing staff has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

How much does it cost?

Traveling show prices start at $275/show and go up.  General admission starts is $11-$14/person.

What is included?
Please see our available packages for what is included in each party.
How many people can we have at the party?
We have done parties for groups as small as one to as large as 1,000 and more! We have found that larger groups do exceptionally well because the excitement of the group helps create an even more exciting party. The party price is based on the package you choose not on the number of people in attendance.
Where can we have our party?
We will bring our show to whatever location you choose as long as the temperatures are between 70-95 °F or can be temporarily brought to those temperatures. (Inside homes, on the lawn, in a park, at a community house, etc.) If a show is done outside, we will need shade for the animals. We also have a small party room at our facilty for rent.
What pets make good kid pets?
Bearded Dragon lizard, Blue Tongue Skink, Leopard Geckos, Ball Pythons, Dumeril Boas, Milk Snake, Box Turtles, Russian Tortoises, Greek Tortoises. (This is just a small sample of good kid pets, the list is not limited to what is listed here.)
Where can I find a list of your public shows?
Look in our calendar of events!

What Our Customers Are Saying

  • 5 star review  ***NOTE: Reservations ARE currently required due to social distancing (as of August 5, 2021), to limit the number of people in the small building at one time. Masks are welcomed but not required. It's pretty much impossible to stay 6 feet away from other people in the small space. But good news! They will soon be expanding to a larger space a few blocks away, and opening a second location! I've been to Scales and Tails around a dozen times over the past 8 years or so, with my niece who loves reptiles but is not allowed to own one. I learn something new every time I go. The workers are all friendly, knowledgeable, and informative, and seem to really care about the animals' welfare. If you want to, you may be allowed to hold or touch a variety of animals, most often a variety of snakes and turtles, and sometimes a lizard and/or a tarantula. But they don't pressure anyone who doesn't want to touch. They teach you how to safely touch or hold the animals, so both you and the animals will be safe. They also teach you which animals you SHOULDN'T touch, and WHY you shouldn't touch them (like the alligator snapping turtle that can bite through bone as easily as butter, or various creatures with venom). I'm excited to see their expanded new space later this year.

5 star review  Cheap fee, so fun! They let you get up close and personal with the animals, and it's so cool! They also shared a lot of cool facts and say you can see/hold different stuff each time you go. My favorite part was holding the reticulating python. Definitely worth visiting!!!

5 star review  Scales and Tails is a lot of fun and highly educational. The employees are enthusiastic, know a ton about the animals, and are happy to answer questions. Our tour included holding snakes, safely interacting with a python per employee instructions and supervision, and saw them wrangle a gator. If an animal ever showed a stress behavior, the employee would note it, point it out for guest education, and immediately put it back. Respect for the animals is great to see and the employees don't hide behaviors for appearances. I strongly recommend this location for anyone interested in reptiles. Conflict of Interest: I am friends with one of the employees.

5 star review  Tyson was awesome! He showed us all the critters and animals, let us touch, pet and even hold a bunch of them, and went into a lot of detail on differences, distinctions, and history of the creatures. Super fun experience, me and my girlfriend had a great time!

5 star review  What an excellent experience. We attended the 2pm tour time today. We had up close and personal interaction with reptiles we otherwise never would. This hour tour completely satisfied my sons reptile fascination. We were taught a great deal about each animals by the guides. The guides took time to give attention to each child in the group. The guides were super friendly and super personable. My son and I loved it. I highly recommend. We will definitely be back for sure.

5 star review  My boyfriend and I visited Scales & Tails and were shown around by Call! All the animals are healthy and well taken care of - you can tell these people love their jobs and really love the animals! There is still so much to learn and see beyond your hour there, so this place definitely warrants a couple of visits! Thank you to Call & the owners for bringing more awareness and education to reptiles and providing this amazing and interactive experience! I will be bringing/telling everyone I know to come check it out!
